Menorrhagia is a common disorder in which women have an unusually heavy or prolonged menstrual flow, with blood loss exceeding 80ml per menstrual period. (Average blood loss during a normal period is 30 to 50ml).
Heavy bleeding can also occur more in the lead up to the menopause and can be a common reason for women to be recommended for hysterectomy. Treatment through acupuncture and herbs can help to prevent the need for surgery.
Some causes of heavy bleeding can be due to the use of the contraceptive coil (IUD), injectable contraception (Depo Provera), fibroids, polyps, pelvic inflammatory disease, hormone imbalances or hypothyroidism and the menstrual cycle can also be affected by stress.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment
Both acupuncture and herbal medicine can prevent heavy bleeding and help to regulate the flow of the menstrual cycle. By selecting relevant acupuncture points and/or prescribing a useful herbal prescription, we aim to re-establish a more normal flow during menstruation, with less pain and without clotting.
